Ultrasound Therapy

Ultrasonic refers to the function that utilizes Ultrasound Technology to treat tissue injuries, remove erythematic, thrombus, reduce scars after acne has been treated, remove abnormal skin color and pigment, remove flecks under skin, remove "pouch" and "black eye", treat sclerosis, massaging the facial skin and prevents the aging process skin tightens and firms.

Ultrasound Therapy, use an airborne or tissue-borne mechanical vibrations, which are essentially the same as sound (sonic) waves, but of higher frequency (0.5 to 5MHz), and therefore inaudible.

ultrasonicbeautytherapy.gifUltrasound energy increases the motion of molecules causing molecular vibration and molecular collisions, resulting in heat. Ultrasound is provided through a treatment device, which is continuously moved across the surface of the treatment area using a lubricant which may be a gel, such as KY gel orater and or special creams.

The lubricant or ‘couplant’ is required to allow the treatment device to move smoothly cross the skin and to provide coupling between the ultrasound generator and the client’s tissue. It is important that there is a steady movement of the treatment head to even out the dose delivered to the target tissues, and to eliminate the risks of damage due to localhigh intensity ‘hot spots’.

Heating is reduced by ‘pulsing’, and therefore higher intensities can be safely used in a pulsed treatment because the average heating produced is reduced. Pulsing also reduces the risk of damage due to the formation of tiny gas bubbles (cavitation)

USE

Ultrasound is commonly used for its heating properties, mainly by physiotherapists and to some extent by beauty therapists. The term ‘ultrasonic diathermy’ is often used, emphasizing the heating effect. Mild heating can reduce pain and muscle spasm, and promote healingprocesses. It may produce a form of micromassage which could reduceoedema (swelling). Ultrasound is also used to assist the penetration of drugs through the skin honophoresis). The treatment dose is calculated in terms of energy density (not thesame as energy output) frequency and time. The position of the patientis chosen so that the area to be treated is accessible and supported. The surface of the skin to be treated is cleaned with an alcohol wipe, before application of the gel.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

The following MUST be avoided with ultrasound:
• Treatment during pregnancy
• The genitalia or tumours or tissue in pre-cancerous states, due to theincrease in cellular division
• Implants such as a pacemaker, or hearing aid, due to possibledisruption of the body’s electrical balance
• Infected areas or tuberculous regions, due to the possibility ofspreading infection or reactivating encapsulated lesions
• Circumstances where haemorrhaging may be provoked, or in areasof recent venous thrombosis, to avoid the possibility of an embolus forming.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

It is important that the treatment head is moved continuously across thetreatment area for the following reasons:
• Ensuring the regularity of the ultrasound beam
• Improving the energy absorption of the tissues
• Reducing the likelihood of ‘standing waves’ from forming, which can damage tissue, and may lead to thrombus formation.
