Iontophoresis Sonophoresis Technique

IONTOPHORESIS AND SONOPHORESIS TREATMENT

What Are Iontophoresis and Sonophoresis?
These techniques are used to help in the delivery of topical ingredients to the skin and are perhaps the most effective means of treating age and sun damage related signs of skin aging.

Using these techniques in skin treatment can reduce pore size, even skin tone, tighten, lift and brighten your skin, while providing an overall healthier appearance

Sonophoresis is the movement of ions through biological material under the influence of low frequency ultrasound. The use of sound to help the skin absorb nutrients and healing agents applied to its surface is not exactly a new technology. The first ultrasound therapy machines for skin care were put into use in 1927. Scientists quickly learned that different wavelengths had different optimal uses.

The lower wavelengths less than 1MHz (1,000,000 vibrations per second), really did not have many effects. Slightly higher frequencies, usually 1MHz-3MHz (1,000,000 to 3,000,000 vibrations per second), helped the skin absorb useful compounds.  During sonophoresis treatment, ultrasonic sound waves stimulate body cells, improving circulation of blood and lymph, and assisting in waste removal. Sensitive skin can return to a beautiful tone and a blemish-free state after just a few weeks of ultrasound therapy.

Iontophoresis is the movement of ions through biological material under the influence of a very mild Galvanic electrical current usually no more than 0.25 amps, to transport electrically charged substances across the skin (Although the Vitamin A and C described in this procedure is the most common product used, any water-soluble product may be used). The electrode has the same electrical charge as the substance applied to the skin, and since like charges repel, the substance is electrostatically penetrate "pushed" across the skin into the layers below.

The Iontophoresis generates:

  • Electro Osmosis, stimulates the flow of water in the skin and
  • Iontophoresis, which makes the skin generally more permeable to foreign substances by very slightly opening skin pores.

These two processes can deliver healing agents as deep as 1 cm (0.4 inch) below the skin

Combining sonophoresis with Iontophoresis (Galvanic) Skin Techniques
Recent research has found that iontophoresis is more effective when combined with ultrasound. When these two techniques are used together, skin care ingredients are carried to lower layers through the 15% of water in the outermost layer of skin. Well-moisturized skin, of course, is more responsive to the technique. The Iontophoresis is used for relatively large surface areas such as the face and neck, whereas Sonophoresis is used on limited areas such as the upper lip and the concentration of character lines around the eyes, on scar tissue and on pigmentation marks. Both methods can be combined, where necessary, for intensive treatments.

Summary
The treatments are designed to stimulate maximum thickening of the skin, normalisation and improvement of collagen and elastin, better control of pigment production, restoration of normal blood flow and proper oxygenation of the skin.
